Greetings parents:
I hope you had a lovely weekend with your family! Week one was a success! We were very busy. We did some fun team building activities, got to know our classmates, went over classroom and school rules and procedures, and talked about some things we would be learning this year. I also spoke with them about the importance of mastering the multiplication facts. So much of their math going forward will rely on this skill. If they are not fluent with these facts, the math concepts will seem much more challenging. I gave them some ideas on how to practice them. There are many apps that can help them practice, but there is nothing better than a stack of flash cards. If they practice them every day for 5-7 minutes, they WILL see results. Many kids only need to practice the 6-9s. The kids who have already mastered them, should practice their division facts.
I will post a message on this site each week by Monday A.M., and will send you a link via email to remind you. If I need to communicate with you during the week, I will send an email. Please reach out to me via email if you have any questions. [email protected]
In my weekly message, I will let you know what we will be covering in class that week, upcoming quizzes, tests or assignments, and any other pertinent school related info.
I will refer to the math groups by color.
On level (4.1) - Red group
Advanced level (4.2) - Blue group
Accelerated level (5.1) - Purple group
I hope to see you on Aug. 21st at Curriculum night!
This week in math:
Red group will begin Unit 1, whole numbers, rounding and counting. Much of this unit is a review of what they should already know, but we will be working with larger numbers.
Blue group will review operations with fractions, adding, subtracting and (4th grade unit 4).
Purple group will begin 5th grade unit 1. We will divide this unit into 2 parts. 1a will cover place value, powers of ten, and order of operations. 1b will cover strategies for multiplying and dividing whole numbers. There will be a separate test for 1a and 1b.
Please email me with any questions!
