Greetings parents: I hope you had a great weekend! We had a fantastic first week back last week. I have really enjoyed getting to know all of the students. We did some "get to know you" activities, some math and science, and went over procedures and expectations. I will go over 4th grade curriculum and expectations on curriculum night, Aug. 28th. More info to follow on that! I will post a new weekly message by Monday of each week. I will send you a reminder email with the link, but you can go to my website anytime - Msbice.weebly.com. In the weekly message, I will let you know what we will be working on that week, any upcoming quizzes or tests, and other misc. info. You'll notice that I have 2 groups under math, blue and purple. The blue (4.2) group is the P.M. group. They are starting the year with the second half of 4th grade curriculum. Next semester, we will cover the first half of 5th grade. The purple (5.1) group is the A.M. group. They will cover the 5th grade math curriculum this year. All students will cover the same science and social studies units. ***It is so important that the students know the multiplication facts fluently. When they know them, students approach the math concepts with more confidence. I've talked to them about how important it is that they are practicing at home, and gave them ideas on how to study them. There are great websites and phone apps, but good old fashion flash cards work too. This week in... MATH Blue group will continue to review unit, operations with fractions. They covered this last year, but this unit covers several fraction concepts. So, it's good to review the material. Purple group will begin unit 1 tomorrow. This unit is large and covers several concepts including: place value, powers of 10, order of operations, multiplication and division. For this reason, we will break it into 2 parts 1a and 1b. This week, we will cover place value, powers of 10, and begin order of operations. SCIENCE We started our first science unit, "Water cycle and Weather" last week with vocabulary. We will continue this week. Students will receive fill in notes tomorrow. They have a quiz on Friday that will cover the vocabulary words they received last week as well as some of the notes. I will help them with what to study, but please make sure they do not wait until Thursday night to start. I look forward to meeting you on curriculum night! If you have any questions, please email me at [email protected] Sincerely, Ms. Bice |
