Greetings parents:
I hope you have had a lovely weekend! We are starting week 3! I hope to see all of you at Curriculum night Tuesday night at 6:30. You will go to your child's homeroom class first, and then to their PM class.
**Picture day is on August 29th. I sent picture order forms home last week. If you want to order pictures, you can do so online, or send the form back in with your payment.**
This week in...
MATH:
Red group will continue with place value: comparing and ordering numbers and rounding. They will have a quiz on Friday. It will cover place value up to millions, comparing and ordering numbers and rounding.
Blue group will continue reviewing fraction concepts from unit 4: adding and subtracting fractions and multiplying fractions by a whole number. They will also begin working on a task called "Table Top".
Purple group will being order of operations (PEMDAS) this week. Their quiz is tentatively scheduled for Friday. It will cover place value concepts, exponents and order of operations. They will begin a task called "Planely a Problem".
SOCIAL STUDIES:
We will begin the unit on American Revolution this week. We will discuss important people, events and causes leading to the Revolution and certain battles. This will be a 3 week unit. There is a fabulous animated historical fiction tv series that originally aired on PBS, called Liberty's Kids, that tells of young people in dramas surrounding the major events in the Revolutionary War days. I show some of the episodes to my classes every year, but there is not enough time for me to show them all. The kids seem to love the series, and they learn quite a bit from watching the episodes. They see what they are learning come to life. Each episode is around 20 minutes long. THIS IS NOT A MANDATORY ASSIGNMENT, but a resource your child can use to better understand the concepts.
