Greetings parents!
Happy New Year! I hope you had a lovely winter break with your family. I enjoyed spending time with my kids, relaxing, visiting with friends and getting things done around the house.
I would like to thank the lovely moms who helped with our class holiday party. The kids really enjoyed it!
Also, I would like to say a big thank you for all of the wonderful gifts, cards and sweet notes you gave me. I appreciate it so much!
This week in...
MATH
Red group will work on adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators. This unit (unit 4) covers adding and subtracting fractions and multiplying a fraction by a whole number.
Blue group will begin the 5th grade curriculum. Unit 1 is longs and covers several concepts, so we split it into parts A and B. Part A will cover place value review, multiplying and dividing by powers of ten, exponents, expressions, and order of operations. Part B will cover multiplication and division with larger numbers. We will give separate tests for parts A and B.
Purple group will continue with unit 4. This week, we will work on adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers with unlike denominators.
SOCIAL STUDIES
We are starting the Westward Expansion unit this week. Some of the topics we will cover include;
Daniel Boone, Lewis and Clark, the Louisiana Purchase, the Oregon Trail, the impact on Native Americans and the Industrial Revolution.
As with our other units, they will have a vocabulary packet and a notes packet.
Students will also have a research project that goes with this unit. They will have plenty of time in class to work on it. However, if they do not use their class time wisely, or if they have multiple absences, they may have to work on it at home as well.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Nichole Bice
