Greetings parents:
I hope you had a lovely weekend. Today's beautiful weather certainly made up for yesterday's cold rain.
Reminders:
*We are still collecting unworn socks and winter hats for Socktober.
*There is also a collection bin for clean gently used coats near the office.
*This week 3rd and 5th graders will take the ITBS test.
*Tomorrow is pajama day! (optional of course)
*If you did not return your child's sign and return papers Friday, please do so tomorrow.
This week in...
MATH
The blue group will continue the measurement unit. We will cover both customary and metric units. Friday we went over customary conversion of length (inches to feet etc). This week, we will cover customary conversion of weight/mass and capacity, and also begin metric conversion. There are many opportunities to talk about measurement conversion with your child including; cooking, using scales, using a measuring tape etc. Don't forget, they have a packet of pages to help them practice at home.
On another note, I need your help in preparing the kids for the next unit. This will be Unit 1 of the 5th grade curriculum. It's the longest unit we teach, so we split it into 2 parts. One part covers multiplication and division with 3 and 4 digit numbers. The students must be fluent with the multiplication facts, when we start it, so they can focus on the concepts. If they have mastered the multiplication facts, please have them work on division facts. Flash cards, apps on your phone, websites all work and help them master the facts. Thank you for your help with this!
The purple group will finish the add/sub decimals unit. Tomorrow we will work on problem solving (word problems with decimals). Tuesday will be a review day, and Wednesday is the summative test. It will cover adding, subtracting, comparing, ordering and rounding decimals. Don't forget about the practice packet!
SCIENCE
We will continue the Solar System unit. This week we will discuss characteristics of planets and phases of the moon. Ask them about the fun facts they are learning!
Students have vocabulary and notes in their binders. They can also access the book online or take one home (if they let me know). Their quiz will be this Friday, 10/25.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you,
Nichole Bice
