Good
Morning Parents,
Today is
the first day of Dolvin Digital Learning. I’m sure you have some questions
about how this is going to work, so I hope this email will provide some answers
for you. Thank you for your patience and flexibility during this time, as this
is a new experience for all of us 😊.
The first week of Digital Learning assignments provided by Fulton County will not be “graded” but they will be turned in upon returning to school. The expectation is they are completed and will help your child get into the
“groove” of online learning and review some standards. If you do not have
printing capabilities your child can answer the questions on a lined piece of
paper. If they use paper, please make sure to have them include the day and the date of the
assignment and the assignment title (for example: Day 1, March 16th, Understanding
Fraction Addition and Subtraction). Although the lessons for week one cover standards we have already covered this year, it is a
very good review of fractions. The purple group will complete the 5th grade lessons since they have already learned those standards in class. We were in the middle of our
measurement unit last week and will resume those lessons in week 2.
The blue group will complete the 4th grade lessons. We were at the
end of our multiplication and division of decimals unit (Unit 3) last week. Our
next unit (Unit 4) covers addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of
fractions with different denominators. So, the 4th grade lessons
your child will complete this week, will be a great review before starting Unit
4 next week.
*Please note that we are following the guidance from Fulton County Schools for week one
of digital learning. When we enter week 2 of digital learning, we will  provide
tasks that follow continuous achievement levels.
For week 2 (and any weeks after) some of the assignments will be graded. I will provide
instructions on how your child can submit these  assignments.
I will be available each day, Mon – Fri, from 7:10 – 3:10 to answer your questions via
email. I also set up a separate Google Classroom (Ms. Bice Digital Learning)
for my classes only. Please have your child join and look at that Google Classroom
each day. The code is   bj45pe7 .
The Fulton County expectation is that 4th graders spend a total of 90 minutes per day on math, ELA and specials. However,
if your child finishes those tasks early, they can look on the Ms. Bice Digital
Learning Google Classroom for additional activities. This is not required.
Think of the Fulton County lessons as “Must do’s” and the lessons on my Google
Classroom as “Can do’s”.  Students can also use that space to ask me questions. Since our next Science unit is Force and
Motion and Simple Machines.  I will include some “Can do” activities relating to those topics. Students should  have the math practice packet for the current unit in their binders. They can work on these also.
We'll get through this! :)
Please do not hesitate to email me with questions.

Sincerely,
Nichole
Bice

Greetings parents:
I hope you had a lovely weekend, and finally enjoyed some sunshine!
We had a great time at the Fernbank Museum last week - I only wish we could have stayed longer.
I think they had a lot of fun! I posted some pictures on the photos section of this site. I will add to it, if I get more. It was hard to get pictures of everyone since we were split into groups.
Students also enjoyed International Day. The parents did a fantastic job on their booths/presentations!
I can't believe I forgot to include this last week, but thank you so so much for spoiling me during Staff Appreciation Week! I was blown away by the gifts and especially the sweet cards from students and families. Dolvin families are the best!! PTA also made us feel extra special that week!! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

This week in...
MATH
Purple group will take the Unit 5 test Wednesday. I moved it back because I wanted to have one more day to review with them. Please remind them to study for this test Monday and Tuesday night. They need to know the shape hierarchy  and characteristics of the quadrilaterals and triangles. We have gone over it quite a bit in class.
Their next unit will  cover measurement and volume.

Blue group will begin unit 3, multiplication and division with decimals, Tuesday.

SOCIAL STUDIES
We will continue with Westward Expansion this week. They will have some class time to work on their social studies projects. They will have a checkpoint on chap 11 and 12 this Friday. They have notes in their binder, and their workbooks. Their unit test is scheduled for the week of 3/2.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Greetings:

I hope you had an enjoyable long weekend with your family (despite this wacky weather).
*Don't forget, we are going on our field trip to Fernbank Museum this Thursday. If your child is bringing a lunch, please pack it in a disposable bag labeled with his/her name. We plan to leave around 8:45 and return around 1:30.
*International Day is tomorrow. Parents and the ESOL teachers always make this a fun educational experience for the students. :)

This week in...
MATH
Purple group will continue unit 5, 2d shapes. We started talking about classifying triangles today. They will bring their unit 5 quiz home tomorrow. Please go over it with your child. We will review Friday, and their unit 5 test is scheduled for Tuesday 2/25. They have their practice packets in their binders.

Blue group will bring their quizzes home today. Please go over it with your child. We will review for the unit 2 (adding and subtracting decimals) test tomorrow, and they will take the test this Friday. Our next unit will cover multiplying and dividing decimals.

SOCIAL STUDIES
We are currently covering Westward Expansion. They will have a checkpoint (like a quiz - but shorter)  on chapters 9 and 10  tomorrow. They have their notes, and I told them to bring their workbooks home also. Remember, if they forget workbooks at school, they can log on through Classlink. They will have another checkpoint next week after chapters 11 and 12.
If they haven't already, please ask your child to tell you about the social studies project for this unit. They have the directions and checklist in their binder! :)

Please let me know if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Nichole Bice

Greetings:

I hope you had a nice weekend with your family!
Reminders:
*If you have not sent in the Feb 20th field trip permission slip, please send it in as soon as soon as possible.
*FOR MY HOMEROOM CLASS ONLY: Our class will need 4 parent chaperones to go on the Fernbank fieldtrip, Feb. 20. If you go, you will be in charge of a group of 5-6 students for the day. Please let me know if you're interested. :)
*Students brought home a permission slip last week with information about the Think First Stay Safe (personal safety) lesson. I have only received a handful of these back. You must return it indicating consent for your child to participate. I need it back even if you opt out. The deadline to opt out is Feb. 7th. If you have any questions about the program, you can email our counselor, Ms. Layton at LaytonJ@fultonschools.org.

This week in...
MATH
Blue group will begin Unit 2, adding and subtracting decimals. This is a very quick unit, and will only take about 2 weeks... a nice break from the very long Unit 1. :)

Purple group will begin unit 5, 2d figures. It's a fairly short unit. The standards focus on classifying 2 dimensional shapes into a hierarchy based on properties.

SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES
Students will take the light/sound test Wednesday. Our test review will be Tuesday, although we reviewed last week also. We have been enjoying the instrument presentations! Very impressive!

We will begin our new Social Studies unit on Thusday, "Expanding the Nation - Moving West". Some of the topics we will cover include the War of 1812, the Lewis and Clark expedition, The Louisiana Purchase, and the Oregon trail.

This week in:
MATH
Purple group will review Unit 4b and work on a task Tuesday and Wednesday, and take the test Thursday. Students brought their quizzes home Friday. I encouraged them to go over it with you. If you have not seen it, please ask them about it. The test will cover multiplication and division of fractions (algorithms, models, and word problems) and line plots. They have practice problems in their packet and binder.

Blue group will review Unit 1b and work on a math task Tuesday and Wednesday, and take the test Thursday. They brought their quizzes home last week. I encouraged them to go over it with you. If you have not seen it, please ask them about it. The students have done really well with the multiplication and division strategies. I'm encouraging them to take their time and check over their work, because most of the missed problems are errors in adding and subtracting. Please have them practice at home.

SCIENCE
We will review the light notes and vocab Tuesday, and they will have a quiz Wednesday.
The test on Light and Sound will be the week of 2/3. I hope the students have had fun creating their instruments! They are due Tuesday.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Nichole Bice

Greetings:
I hope you had a great long weekend, and enjoyed the nice weather with your family!
I love the cool temps!
Your child may have told you about the new science project. The students seem excited about it!  I want to explain a few things...
They do NOT have to make a fancy instrument that already exists (i.e. I'm not expecting them to bring in a handmade violin or wooden guitar). They do not have to play a song on it. They are creating something that can change pitch and volume.  We have talked in class extensively about how to manipulate instruments to change pitch. I have done this project with my students for years, and I always see a variety of instruments. Some are simple using items found around the house, and some are more elaborate. Your child can be creative and have fun, but the object is that it has to change pitch and volume, and they need to be able to explain how. There is also a written/typed portion. They have the instructions and checklist of everything to include. They will have some class time to work on it this week. Students can bring materials Wed, Thu and Fri. The due date is Tuesday 1/28. They will probably want to work on it at home also. I'm happy to answer any questions! :)
This week in...
MATH
Purple group will review Tuesday, and take a quiz Wed on multiplying and dividing fractions. We will cover line plots Thursday and Friday. Their unit 4b test is scheduled for 1/29.

Blue group will review Tuesday and take a quiz Wed on multiplication and division. They will work on word problems and math tasks Thursday and Friday. I can tell they have been practicing! Their test is scheduled for Wednesday 1/29.

SCIENCE
We will talk about light  - how it travels, how it interacts with objects, reflection and refraction etc. They will have vocab and notes in their binder. They will also work on their instrument project.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Nichole Bice

Greetings parents!
I hope you had a nice weekend despite the crummy weather. It looks like we'll have some days with indoor recess this week.
Semester 2 is off to a great start and the kiddos are working hard!
This week in...
MATH
Purple group will continue with Unit 4 - multiplication with fractions, and start division with fractions. They will also work on a task called "Planely a Problem". Ask them about it!

Blue group will continue with unit 1b - multiplication and division with whole numbers. They did really well with multiplication, so we are moving on to division this week. Students will work on 2 strategies - Partial quotient strategy and long division strategy (algorithm - they way you and I learned how to divide :).  There is a video on the google classroom on how to do the partial quotient strategy. You can also look online, and find many videos explaining the strategy. They will also work on a task called "planely a problem".

SCIENCE
Students will continue with the sound portion of the Light/sound unit. Have they shared with you what they learned about pitch and amplitude? They had fun exploring different ways to change pitch Friday.
They will have a quiz Thursday on vocabulary and notes from class.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Nichole Bice :)

.Greetings and Happy New Year!

I hope you are enjoying your break! Teachers had a work day today to prepare for the kiddos' return next week.
A BIG heartfelt thank you for all of the wonderful cards and gifts. I was truly spoiled:).
The kids had a great time at the holiday party the Friday before break. Thank you to Lindsay Phillips for organizing and the amazing parents who helped out!!
Reminders:
** This weekend is a great time to have your child clean out and organize his/her backpack and binder.  We are starting fresh in math and science next week.
**Don't forget to you look in your child's agenda  for important assessment dates and extra practice  :).
** Report cards will go home January 13.

Next week in...
MATH
Purple group will start unit 4 part B, multiplying and dividing fractions. They will receive a practice packet, and I will assign homework on Tuesday and Thursday for extra practice.

Blue group will start unit 1 part B, multiplication and division. I'm including those standards below. The best way to do well on these concepts is to practice practice practice!

MGSE.5.NBT.5 Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm (or other strategies demonstrating understanding of multiplication) up to a 3 digit by 2 digit factor.
MGSE.5.NBT.6. Fluently divide up to 4- digit dividends and 2-digit divisors by using at least one of the following methods: strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations or concrete models. (e.g., rectangular arrays, area models).

SCIENCE
We are starting the Sound and Light unit next week. The first part of the unit will focus on Sound. Students usually really like this unit because it's something they can really relate to, but they learn some interesting new facts to share... ask them about it!. Students will have vocabulary and notes in their binder.

Please enjoy the last few days of break, and let me know if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Nichole Bice
